Re Dead writer casts doubt on Venezuela poll

By Aleksander Boyd

London 18.07.05 | Andy Webb-Vidal reports in today's FT "Henri Charrière, the convict who vividly recalled his multiple escape bids from the disease-ridden penal colony of French Guiana in the novel Papillon, has been found “alive” in Venezuela, 32 years after his reported death. Or so Venezuela's electoral register would have you believe."

Very pertinent point to demonstrate how utterly unreliable Venezuela's electoral register truly is. According to the National Electoral Council (CNE) register Charrière -ID No 1728629- can still vote in "Instituto Nuevas Profesiones" in El Bosque "32 years after his reported death" as reported by Webb-Vidal.

Cédula: V-1728629
Nombre: CHARRIERO SHIERRY HENRY
Centro: INST UNIV NUEVAS PROFESIONES
Dirección: AV PRINCIPAL EL BOSQUE
Estado: EDO. MIRANDA
Municipio: MP. CHACAO
Parroquia: PQ. CHACAO

However this is not an isolated case. Take for instance ID No 2122133.

Cédula: V-2122133
Nombre: ARREGUI AIZPURUA MARIA ARANZAZUX
Centro: CENTRO COMERCIAL CADA
Dirección: BOULEVAR EL CAFETAL CAURIMARE
Estado: EDO. MIRANDA
Municipio: MP. BARUTA
Parroquia: PQ. EL CAFETAL

That lady can also vote in Centro Comercial CADA in Caurimare, in spite of having died nearly 22 years ago. How do I know this? The voter in question was my mother. No wonder why CNE's board of directors stubbornly, and illegaly, impede any audits to the register for the elections winning streak of their boss may come to a sudden end.
